We are The Religious Sisters of Charity, a religious congregation of women dedicated to working with the poor, vulnerable and marginalised. Our congregation was founded by Mary Aikenhead in Ireland in 1815.
Mary Aikenhead saw social, economic, and spiritual deprivation all around her and her desire was to ‘give to the poor what the rich could buy for money’. She and her sisters were the first congregation to visit poor people in their homes. Within thirty years they had established a hospital, St. Vincent’s (which was then in St. Stephen’s Green), and opened schools for the poor. The congregation also pioneered the Hospice Movement.
Today, our sisters continue this work on three continents responding to the social, economic and spiritual issues of our day.
